Maya is founder of the playful, vintage clothing line “Boxing Kitten”, which celebrates “the spirit and lives of women who have come before”. How fitting is it that we are celebrating Maya, a woman who is breaking boundaries by creating clothes that are unique and unexpected. Her current collection is “driven by elements within the political and cultural climate of the Civil Rights Movement.”
Her collections generally use African and bold colored prints. Maya’s designs have been noticed by celebrities such as Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Fergie, and Erykah Badu, who modeled the pieces in Giant magazine’s February 2008 issue, which was the first major promotion of her line. She has also been featured in The New York Times, Teen Vogue, and Arise.
What we can expect in the future is Maya eventually adding a mens line, and continuing to work with and style top celebrities. We also hope that her clothing line helps us learn to embrace African culture and fashion through her amazing African inspired designs.
