When you think of the ‘90s, one of the first things that comes to mind is the iconic supermodels of the era and the unforgettable beauty looks they wore. For many of us, Naomi Campbell, in particular, served as the ultimate source of inspiration, especially for her smoky eye makeup, often paired with dark brown lip liner framing a cool-toned (sometimes frosty) lipstick shade. It’s a look that has since become a classic — and celebrity makeup artist Mila Thomas recreated it for Ulta Beauty.

To start, Thomas prepped the model’s skin with the BeautyStat Cosmetics Universal C Skin Refiner 20% Vitamin C Brightening Serum to retexturize and help brighten any hyperpigmentation. Then, it was time for the base. For that, she used Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Liquid Foundation to mimic the matte finish that was so popular in the ‘90s. She mixed two different shades to get a second-skin finish and the perfect match to her tone. To add dimension to the look, Thomas applied bronzer close to the model’s earbones, at the top of her forehead, and along her jawline. First, she went in with Juvia’s Place Bronzed Cream Bronzer, then followed up with Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer to set it in place and give it more longevity.

If you weren’t rocking thin brows in the ‘90s, you might have been wearing yours in a slightly lighter hue than your natural brow hairs. Instead of reaching for bleach, Thomas got the effect with a brow gel in a hue lighter than the model’s natural one. She then started creating a smoky eye look by blending a black pencil and brown shadows on the model’s lids.

Now for the hallmark of a ’90s makeup look: bold, dark lip liner. Back in the day, women would use black eyeliner, burned at the tip with a lighter for smoother application and more intense payoff. In 2025, we have a host of long-wearing, deeply pigmented formulas in a range of hues suitable for melanated skin tones. After adding the liner, she filled in her lips with a lighter, cool-toned taupe hue, which she blended in for a more seamless finish.
