The inauguration on Jan. 20 was an event unlike any other, marked by moments that will undoubtedly be etched in history books that are hopefully buried somewhere in a dusty cellar out of site. From the anxiety surrounding Donald Trump’s divisive policies to the unwavering loyalty of his supporters, the ceremony was filled with strange and memorable occurrences. The day was a reflection of the stark contrasts that define Trump’s presidency, both the deep polarization it engenders and the fervent devotion of his base.
Here are some of the most unusual and striking moments that unfolded during the inauguration.
Adam Lippes catches backlash for making Melania Trump’s inauguration dress.
American designer Adam Lippes faced backlash from anti-Trump supporters on Instagram Monday after revealing that he designed the navy outfit worn by First Lady Melania Trump. The ensemble featured a navy silk wool coat, a matching pencil skirt, and an ivory silk crepe blouse. To complement the look, the 54-year-old also wore a round black-and-white hat, which many perceived as having an ominous undertone.
“What a haunting image. The day we officially entered an authoritarian regime,” wrote one user in the comments section of Lippes’ Instagram post.
“She looks appropriately dressed to attend the funeral of America’s democracy. Unfollowing,” another naysayer commented.
Despite the backlash, Lippes stood by his decision to design Melania’s inauguration ensemble.
“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump. Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world,” he penned.
Elon Musk flashes a Nazi-esque wave to the crowd at Capital One Arena.
Elon Musk sparked outrage online when he thanked voters at Trump’s victory rally at Capital One Arena on Monday for helping to make a second Trump presidency “happen,” using a one-armed gesture resembling a Nazi salute. After placing his right hand over his heart, Musk extended the same arm straight ahead, then turned to repeat the motion for those seated behind him. The footage quickly went viral, prompting Musk to denounce the Nazi comparisons just hours later.
In response, Musk posted on X: “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”
Trump supporters left their bags in the street.
Security was exceptionally tight during Monday’s inauguration rally at Capital One Arena, with attendees prohibited from bringing their belongings inside. Trump supporters, eager to witness the 78-year-old Republican’s swearing-in, left their personal items on the street. News4’s Joseph Olmo spotted piles of abandoned purses, some branded with Louis Vuitton and Lululemon.
Former President Barack Obama was booed by rally-goers.
On Jan. 20, at the Capital One Arena, Trump supporters loudly booed former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as former Secretary Hillary Clinton, when they were shown arriving for the inauguration ceremony at the White House.
Trump signs executive orders aimed at defending women’s rights and restoring the death penalty among others.
At the rally, Trump signed over a dozen executive orders, implementing policies that are already setting a divisive tone for his administration. According to the president, one measure will protect women’s rights by safeguarding freedom of conscience. The policy seeks to clarify definitions, specifying that women are biologically female and men are biologically male. The Republican Party leader also signed an order that will reinstate the death penalty and another that will withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization, among other policies.
