Imagine checking out your favorite book from a library named after your favorite femcee. For the students at Melrose High School in Memphis, that will soon be a reality thanks to their hometown hero, GloRilla.
On Dec.17, GloRilla returned to her Orange Mound alma mater. She brought a $25,000 check to help fund literacy programs, academic initiatives, and school improvements.
GloRilla to have a new library named after her in her hometown of Memphis.
School officials say in honor of Big Glo’s donation, they will rename their library the Gloria H. Woods Media Center in her honor.
“We want to upgrade our system so students can be more interactive, so they can research and take their learning to the next level,” Principal Kristopher Davis said during a Dec. 18 press conference.
Melrose High played a significant role in shaping GloRilla’s journey. Seven years ago, she was a senior in those same halls, starting the career she has skyrocketed now.
Surprised by her appearance, social media coverage shows students in a frenzy when the “Yeah Glo!” rapper arrived. According to reports, they had no idea she was coming.
“I always wished somebody could do that when I was younger,” GloRilla said, according to a local Fox affiliate. “So the fact that I have the ability to do it now, it warms my heart.”
Glo captured the moment on Instagram writing, “Bought my first piece of land in my city today along with giving back to my high school I graduated from & they named their media center after me 🥳God is good & life is great 👏🏼I’m so thankful !! .”
GloRilla is proof that when Black women win – we all win!
This isn’t GloRilla’s first time giving back to Memphis students. Big Glo has been in her philanthropic bag for a while now. In 2022, she donated $20,000 to Westside Middle School and followed it up with $25,000 to MLK Prep Academy in 2023.
Her donation culminates a blockbuster year for the 24-year-old rapper. If anyone “won 2024,” it would be GloRilla. She’s been out here crushing it in music, fashion, and entertainment while staying true to her Memphis roots.
From collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion and Kehlani to major award nominations, media appearances, and even receiving the key to the city of Memphis, Glo has been glowing!
GloRilla is proof that when Black women win, we all win. She’s out here inspiring the next generation while unapologetically being herself.
We are here for it. Shine on, sis.
