Red lips have always been a symbol of glamor. The ivory skin of old Hollywood’s elite seem to come to mind when accompanying the red lip as it’s most prized subject throughout history. Perhaps this is why women of color are shy to dawn the most infamous shade of lipstick? In fact, too often women of color have been told that red doesn’t suite them. I was once interviewed as a celebrity makeup artist by one of New York City’s leading radio personalities who blatantly told me on-air that dark skinned women shouldn’t wear red lipstick. Well. In this 21st century, and on Al Gore’s internet, I’m here to remind you that nothing has ever been more un-freaking-true.

The holidays are upon us and although you damn sure don’t need any reason at all to wear a red lip, I know so many of you are easing your way into this thing with caution and looking for the perfect excuse. Let’s explore some of my go-to reds for every hue of melanated women.

MAC Cosmetics Ruby Woo, $18.50

This is the mother of all reds…the red that my makeup kit can not live without. The red that will forever embody what a red lip is supposed to look like! Long before she shocked the world with 50 shades of inclusive foundation, Rihanna knew what was up when it came to a red lip. She paid homage to the legendary MAC red by naming her own lipstick “RiRi Woo” when she partnered with MAC back in 2013 . The color is only ever so slightly different than its muse if hardly at all. YES! Ruby Woo ($18.50, maccosmetics.com) is the most iconic shade of red there is and I’ve yet to see a single shade of HUMAN that it doesn’t look good on.

Sacha Cosmetics ‘Pass The Money’, $15.00

This liquid matte ($15.00, sachacosmetics.com) is rich, deep and has lasting power…Exactly how I need my husband to be! Oh! And I wouldn’t mind if he was Trini too! Yup! Sacha Cosmetics is one of the beauty industries few Black owned and operating cosmetic lines hailing from Trinidad. I don’t know about you but whenever I have a change to, I’m always gonna “Pass The Money” to a Black owned business!

Urban Decay ‘Bad Blood’, $19.00

Although I love a good matte lipstick there are some of us that just cant take how dry it leaves our lips feeling. This one’s for you! Bad Blood ($19.00, ulta.com) is still matte but not quite as drying. It’s the perfect in-between and its berry- red color is sure to look great on the darkest of complexions.

Fenty Mini Longwear Fluid Lip Color ‘Underdawg’, $15.00

The first thing that you need to know is that this color is a limited edition ($15.00, sephora.com)! Get it while ya can and get a couple because you’re gonna wish you had! This deep burgundy with red undertones is absolute PERFECTION for the dark skinned goddess in particular but will also bring mystery and a “can’t miss” focal point to the light skinned woman’s look. This color is mandatory!

Jordana Classic Color Lip Liner ‘Rich Rouge’, 1.99

Ummm, did you actually think I wasn’t gonna include some drug store magic in this article? HA! I LIVE for a good drugstore product and this one right here is a STAPLE! In fact, any time you’ve seen me wear a red lip, nine times outta ten its Ruby Woo and its accompanied by this here lip liner! I love Jordana’s lip liners and I’m sure you will too!

If you are ever out of red lipstick or forget your red, this is a great liner to color in your lips.

Beauties, these are some of my favorite red lipsticks. Wear them boldly and with the most beautiful brown backdrop that God so graciously blessed the earth with! Sound off in the comment section which lipsticks are your favorites!
