Let The Melanin Live: Ghana To Ban Skin Bleaching Products In August

Despite the onslaught of celebratory memes, websites, and companies dedicated to Blackness and #melanation, skin bleaching is still very much a thing in many parts of the world.

Ghana has taken steps to eliminate this harmful practice, by banning the sale of cosmetic products that contain the skin bleaching agent hydroquinone, Face2FaceAfrica reports.

The legislation comes from the state’s Standard Authority’s mission to thwart the use of cancer-causing chemicals within the Ghanian market.

James Lartey, FDA spokeperson, released a statement saying:

“Concerning skin lightening products, we are saying that from August 2016, all products containing hydroquinone will not be allowed into the country. From 2016, the acceptance for skin lightening products is going to be zero,”he revealed to Starr FM in Accra.

This is a great move for the country, considering the popularity of these products among celebrities and youth, the site reports.

Hopefully lack of access to hydroquinone will help people struggling with colorism learn to appreciate and love the skin they’re in more.
