#FeelTheBern: Erica Garner Urges Harlem to Vote For Sanders

On Saturday at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, Erica Garner, along with Harry Belafonte and Nina Turner, urged New Yorkers to cast their state primary vote for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Garner talked about grieving for her father, Eric Garner who was killed in 2014 by police in Staten Island, race and why African-Americans should support Sanders.

“I struggle everyday. On top of losing my Dad, on top of my Dad being exploited by artists and politicians…enough it enough…we need to become involved in the political process, because all of these people are up for election right now. We need them out to get some new people in. And Bernie, started out with nothing, really low numbers, but because of us, he is going to be our President,” she exclaimed.

Garner officially endorsed Sanders in February, saying in a campaign video, “I believe Bernie Sanders is a protester. He’s not scared to go up against the criminal justice system. I’m behind anyone who is going to listen, who is going to speak up for us. I think we need to believe in a leader like Bernie Sanders.”

According to the New York Times, at this same town hall meeting, Sanders addressed Bill Clinton’s recent fight with Black protestors at a rally in Philadelphia calling the former President’s comments “unacceptable” and insisting that “the president owes the American people an apology for trying to defend the indefensible.”

Parents Sue NYC Education Department Over Violence In Schools

New York City schools has some of the highest school violence rates in the U.S., and some parents have decided to fight back.

According to NBC New York, several New York City parents and students have filed a class-action lawsuit against the city Department of Education alleging the nation’s largest school district has failed to protect children from violence and bullying. The 96-page legal brief accuses the city of not adequately reporting on investigations of school violence and claims that violence is actually on the rise, a notion that NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio says is not true, NBC noted.

“When we look at the facts, school safety is doing a very good job continuing a trend that started in the last administration and continues,” he said. “This year to date, the major crime in our schools is down 14.29 percent and other crimes down 6.77 percent.”

However parents of children who have been bullied in the school system say something different.

One parents who is suing said her “7-year-old son was dragged down by a flight of stairs by a teacher who was allowed to remain in the classroom and was later arrested on assault charges in an attack on a different child” and another said “a teacher attacked her 8-year-old son, and that the school failed to take action after she expressed concerns for the boy’s safety,” NBC wrote.
