Ferguson Protestor Sentenced To Eight Years In Prison For Arson

For the past year, 19-year-old Joshua Williams has been at the forefront of peaceful, Black Lives Matters protests throughout Ferguson, Missouri. Williams’ activism has been captured by CNN and other national media outlets. He was also photographed walking hand in hand with Civil Rights activist Dr. Cornel West.

Williams will spend the next 8 years in prison after being convicted of arson for setting fire to a QuickTrip convenience store in Berkley, MO.

Antonio Martin, 18, was shot by a police officer at an Exxon gas station, across the street from the QuickTrip on December 23, 2014. Williams was caught on surveillance camera setting fire to the Quick Trip on December 24.

While looters had already broken into the store as seen on the video footage, Williams was also convicted of burglary and stealing gum, money and the lighter fluid used to set the QuickTrip ablaze. The fire was put out relatively quickly without causing major damage to the store. Williams’ sentences for the three charges will run concurrently.

Following the verdict, supporters chanted “Justice For Josh Williams, Justice For All Of Us” in the courtroom.
