For the second time in less than a month, a “Black Lives Matter” sign was vandalized outside of a church in Maryland.
The River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation has made an effort to educate themselves and their neighbors on the movement to end state violence in Black communities. The church, which is predominately White, says the sign was meant to be a natural progression in spreading the word in the small town, according to the Huffington Post. They also have an FYI section on their website about the history of the movement and a breakdown on the language of “All Lives Matter.”
Their efforts went overlooked when the word “Black” was cut out of the sign outside the church this week, leaving “Lives Matter” – a nod to the too-often used rebuttal, “All Lives Matter.”
The first time the sign was vandalized was July 29, but it was replaced in a few weeks.

Rev. Louise Green, the church’s minister for congregational life, released a statement on Facebook about the vandalism. She also confirmed the church will continue to stand with the movement.
Other memorials honoring Black lives have been vandalized in the past. A memorial in Ottawa, Canada honoring Sandra Bland was defaced with “All Lives Matter” written across her name. Michael Brown’s makeshift memorial was also vandalized several times during the unrest in Ferguson last year.
