Just after Misty Copeland was announced as the first Black principal ballerina at American Ballet Theatre comes more beautiful news. She will be dancing the role of Ivy in On the Town on Broadway, reports TIME.
“I was contacted by them and they actually wanted me to go in pretty quickly, and it was all just ‘Oh my gosh, this is not something I ever thought I would do,’” Copeland told TIME. “If I’m going to be part of a Broadway show, I think this is the one.”
On the Town is a 1944 musical based on a ballet that originally premiered at the American Ballet Theatre. It’s about three sailors who visit New York City for a day, and it features the well known song “New York, New York.” Copeland’s character is the female lead who falls in love with one of the sailors, a role that was originally played by a Japanese-American ballerina.
Copeland will also have to sing in the role. There won’t be much singing for her character, but Copeland says this is definitely a new experience. And if her dedication to dance is an indication for how she will perform in this case, we have nothing to be worried about. Yaaaaassssss Misty On Pointe!
Copeland will dance in the show from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6.
