On June 3rd, heavy rains pommeled Accra, the capital city of Ghana, forcing residents to seek shelter wherever they could find it. The situation quickly went from bad to worse when a leak caused an explosion at a gas station where people had been seeking shelter from the rains. Many who survived the explosion, unfortunately, were then swept away by the heavy waters that have caused immense havoc to the city.
The death toll has been said to reach up to 150 people.

Now call me bitterly observant, but what does it say about our media (and our public) when such things receive little to no attention while there is constant attention paid to the most inconsequential things. Believe it or not, Ghana and many other countries in Africa are not places where such things happen all the time, so there really shouldn’t be a reason for an indifferent attitude.
Many have taken to Twitter to share their stories and pictures of this event, and the images of destruction and loss of life have been especially heartbreaking. Follow #AccraFloods on Twitter to find out the latest. And for goodness sake, let’s spare moment in our thoughts for all those facing the current tragedy.
