On your marks, get set…go! Spring is here. So if you have been waiting for the sun in order to run, then now is your time. Whether you are lacing up a pair of running shoes for the first time or have been pounding the pavement for awhile now, I have this season’s best gear for both your running level and your budget. So what are you waiting for? Bring on the mileage!

Run Thrifty (Under $50)
If the quality of your music effects the quality of your workouts, then you absolutely must check out SnuggBuds headsets. I was blown away by how crisp and full of bass the sound was in these earbuds. However the part that blew my mind completely was the company’s confidence and impressive guarantee.
For as low as $29.95, you not only get a rockstar set of earbuds but also faith in knowing that all SnuggBuds headsets come with a six month replacement warranty as well as a 18-month wear and tear policy. So what are you waiting for? Rock out while you run out.
And while you are at it you might as well bump and grind your way over to JCPenney’s. I recently had the chance to check out their new and improved fitness line and was beyond impressed, by both the price and the quality. The Xersion™ Pleated Half-Zip Jacket is the perfect layering piece and the Xersion™ Ankle Leggings have all the bells and whistles needed for a great run–a zipper back pocket for your keys and phone as well as ankle zippers for extra air flow. Both retail at $48.00 and are perfect for running or even running errands.
The Dub Running Club ($100 Or Less)
Running shoes can cost you a pretty penny, however I have found the perfect pair that is not only $100 flat, but is worth every dime. Introducing, the Brooks Launch–this neutral award winning pair is an excellent choice if you are looking for a semi light weight that is also cushioned and supportive. Your toes are going to love the extra room since the toe box is wide and as you work towards perfecting your running form you will also appreciate the flexibility this shoe provides. Totally worth the price. Trust me – you wont find anything like the Launch and once you hit the pavement in them you will never look at other running shoes the same.
Next up – show your muscles some tender love and care with the GRID 2.0 Foam Roller ($64.99) by Trigger Point Therapy. This revolutionary tool is a RAD spin on traditional foam rolling since it incorporates Matrix Technolgy and Distrodensity™ Zones. In simple terms – this unique design allows for a targeted massage since the “tubular” feature feels like fingers and the “high & firm” section feels like fingertips. Perfect for general use and core workouts. Tight on space or travel a lot? Holla at the GRID Mini. It is only $24.99 and it attaches to any gym bag, backpack, or can easily fit inside your suitcase.
Surge And Splurge ($100-$250)
We’ve all heard the term “you get what you pay for,” and when it comes to the Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3 this popular phrase is absolutely true. $209.99 may seem crazy to you now, but you just wait until you take a spin in these RAD running shoes – the cost may be high, but the benefits are priceless. It is lightweight, comfortable and super durable. However the best part (and reason why it is worth the cost) is the considerable drop. This simply means that the heel sits up higher than the toe. Why does this matter? Well if you are a heel striker (which P.S. most new runners are) this element is awesome. Couple this with the durability and this shoe is also excellent for runners who are also heavy set. I love this shoe and unlike other running shoes – I never want to take them off.
So now that you will be clocking serious miles with your new futuristic looking Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3’s you might as well know exactly how many miles you are banking. Which is why I think the Nike+ SportWatch GPS (with Sensor) Powered by TomTom ® is also worth the splurge. For $140, rocking this sports watch is like having a trainer on your wrist. It helps you track your distance and calories, creates workout reminders, and you can share your personal bests with friends. With just a tap on the screen, you can mark laps and activate the backlight and personalize the data that you want to see during your run. Touchscreen sweaty RADness in full effect.
A Note To Newbies: Run With Your Heart
Bonus tip–I love meeting new runners. I remember when my journey began almost seven years ago. I had no idea how fast I was running (and didn’t care), my gear also doubled as my pajamas and my running shoes were whatever purple pair was on sale at TJ Maxx. I was just a carefree runner grateful to be able to run just one mile. And while I actually own running gear and run in the right running shoe for my gait today, my memories of when I first started this sweaty journey never leave my now “healthier than ever” heart.
So I teamed up with Olympic Gold Medalist and 5X World Champion Track & Field star, Brittney Reese to provide some motivation for all you determined and brave first time running beauties.
If nothing else, remember this: when your legs get tired, run with your heart. I can’t tell you how many runs I’ve completed not because my legs were the strongest but because my intentions were. According to Reese, “At times there will be challenges but you have to have the ability to push through mental barriers. When things get tough pushing harder and not giving up can help you get through anything.” On and off the track, pavement or treadmill. True story. Don’t give up!
