The use of social media in today’s working environment is almost a necessity to stay on top of up to date trends, potential jobs and effective networking. LinkedIn, a social media engine utilized particularly for networking professionals, hosts great benefits for its users and members. Though this hub of useful connections and information is readily available to all, most of us are not fully taking advantage of how LinkedIn can work in our favor for employment gains whether you are a VP at a Fortune 500 company or an entrepreneur. Here are four effective changes to make to your LinkedIn account to ensure favorable marketability of yourself and your skills:

1) Upload an Appropriate and Flattering Photo:
LinkedIn is not like Twitter or Facebook due to its rich reputation and goal of connecting those looking for work related information and opportunities. If you have a professional headshot, this should be your profile picture. It should resonate your professionalism and reflect the type of environment and culture you seek to work in. You should invest in a high quality headshot which can be used for years to come.
2) Edit Your Groups:
There are numerous “Groups” within LinkedIn which seek to join those of like-minded interests together. If you are an attorney, there are groups dedicated specifically to litigators and contract attorneys. If you work in finance, look for and update all relevant groups which share pertinent information surrounding breakthroughs within your particular industry and/or field. The more groups you join, the more information and opportunities you can become privy to.
3) Edit Your Profile and Resume:
Some of us have been on LinkedIn so long, we may have a 2009 resume still uploaded despite having moved on to bigger and better employment opportunities. To effectively sell yourself, you must display your most recent accomplishments and experiences.
4) Reach Out:
Connect with others who matter. Post status updates highlighting news and trends in your area of focus. Sure, you receive invitations from the same people you fellowship with on Facebook and Twitter, however, the goal of LinkedIn is to link you to those you do not know per se. If there is an open position you are interested in, locate the executives who may have some insight into getting you hired for that job. Also, if you are an entrepreneur looking for new opportunities and clients, make the most of LinkedIn to garner new business and make new connections with those who may be able to assist you in building your business and your brand.
