Jermaine Dupri Calls Chris Kelly “The Son I Never Had,” + Cause Of Death Still Pending After Autopsy

Chris “MacDaddy” Kelly of the rap duo Kris Kross died yesterday, taking a piece of 90’s hip-hop with him.

Friends, family and fans have been morning Kelly’s death, and Jermaine Dupri — who discovered the group almost two decades ago — decided to share his grief with the world in a heartfelt letter. Along with revealing that be probably spent more time with the members of Kris Kross than with anyone else in his life, he described MacDaddy as the son he never had.

An autopsy was completed for the late rapper today, however the official cause of death is still pending toxicology results.

E! News reports there was no indication of foul play but police are following leads that Kelly suffered a possible drug overdose. According to a police report, the hip-hop star had been using a combination of cocaine and heroin, known as a “speedball,” the night before his death.

“The information we obtained at the scene leads to believe it was a possible drug overdose,” said Fulton County Police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester. “We are investigating as a drug overdose unless the toxicology report from the medical examiner’s office states otherwise.”

Chris’ mother, Donna Kelly Pratt, told an investigator that the night before, Kelly was out and had taken a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Pratt stated that they had brought the MC home to recover from his drug use and had done this several times in the past. She also noted that Kelly felt nauseous all morning and passed out at approximately 3 p.m.

Kelly was found “unresponsive” and with “no life signs” in his Atlanta home on May 1.
