Warning: This video contains violence and is extremely graphic.

“Good Or Bad Parenting” is a viral video of a father beating his two daughters. Allegedly, the two girls uploaded a video of themselves “twerking” on Facebook. Their father caught wind of their sexually explicit video and promptly took to giving them an old-school beating with a cable cord. The girls scream in sheer agony as their father continually beats them and it’s a very difficult thing to watch.

As this video accrues views, people are starting to chatter on whether or not this is considered abusive behavior. #TeamBeautiful decided to open up the conversation and sound off on this father’s violent parenting style.

It’s the screams from the second daughter that make this video hard to watch. However, as a southern girl, I grew up knowing what it meant to fully respect my mother. I am also the youngest of six, so I’ve watched as my older brothers and sisters made the foolish mistakes of disobeying or disrespecting my mother and reaping what they’ve sown. I’ve always been afraid of punishment, so I acted accordingly. I remember one time, my mother was telling my sister what she must do when she goes off to college and my sister had a huge attitude and said, “Whatever…” under her breath, from a different room. With the extraordinary hearing my mother has, before the “er” and “whatever” escaped my sister’s lips, my mom was in her face, beating my shocked sister with an extension cord. With each blow and scream, I cringed. Tears started to fall and before I knew it, I was full-on blubbering. I couldn’t take it. After my mom returned to the kitchen, an eerie silence hung in the room like an ominous grey storm cloud.

I knew my sister needed chastising for her for her sass, but I didn’t know if she deserved such a harsh beating. But I’ll tell you what, as a grown 30+ woman, my sister hasn’t spoken to my mom like that since that day. The father in this video is on a mission. He wants to send the message to his daughters that putting themselves online in a provocative way isn’t how he’s raising them. He wants them to remember this beating and act accordingly in the future. While I don’t condone violence, I do condone parents who use this type of discipline to get their point across. I’m aware of the thin line between chastising and abuse (because some parents take things too far) and I do think the father in the video is walking right on that line, but I’m not against his method.

As a parent, I get how disappointed you are when your child makes a bad decision (and for the record, twerking on camera is a really bad decision). The anger that fuels that beating can quickly switch to abuse. But it’s so many things wrong with this video. From the excessive whips, to the numerous screams heard and even the real question I want answered–who is recording this in the first place.

The biggest point that I take from this is that this isn’t new. What’s new is our technology. So every moment of our lives is documented. What our parents did to us may have been abuse at times, but it was never questioned. We knew we did something wrong and this was the punishment.

Hopefully that father from the video reads this and takes my advice. It is our responsibility to learn from this type of discipline and actually have conversations with our children.

I remember distinctly when Charmaine beat me for the first time. I was shocked beyond measure, but more so disappointed in myself that I caused my mother to be so upset in my actions that it brought out that side of her. Growing up, I didn’t get into too much trouble, but on those rare moments, my mom had no problem swinging. Now, do I agree with the father disciplining his daughters, yes! For whatever reason, parenting isn’t the same as it used to be. It’s almost as if parents are looked down upon when they actually parent their children. But it’s totally okay for inappropriate children to run amuck and parents sit back and do nothing. There is a difference between a child misbehaving or acting out and suffering the repercussions, and an abusive parent. This father isn’t an abusive dad.

As someone who got beatings on the regular while growing up in the Caribbean (which was the norm), I swore that when I had children I would never beat them. Until you have them, you cannot know how you will discipline. There is a difference between punishment and abuse. Abuse is not acceptable, and what this father did is clearly abuse.

Now I don’t know what other acts these kids did prior to posting the “twerking” video, but clearly this father had some pent up frustrations that caused him to act out like this.

If my young daughters uploaded a “twerking” video to the Internet, I would beat them too! However, it would not be as brutal as the father who decided to use an extension cord to discipline his children. I am aware that this form of parenting is common in certain areas, but it wasn’t in mine, nor do I have to agree with it.

My parents believed in physical discipline. Though I wasn’t beat with the belt, I watched my sister get hit. I was slapped, one time, when I got out of line and, simply put, I deserved it. I never committed the same offense again. I believe that, sometimes, it is the best method but there’s a thick line between discipline and abuse. The footage of the father beating his daughters as they screamed in agony, to me, is closer to the abuse end of the spectrum. The point was made after the first few swings of his heavy arm. It went further than it should.

I noticed the second daughter got it the worse and I wonder if she is older. Still, the whipping lasted too long.
