Black Fathers Need To Step It Up For Black Daughters
I recently listened to this show on NPR hosted by Michel Martin called Fathers’ Need to Step Up’ For Black Daughters. This was a really interesting discussion between the filmmaker Jacks Morton who produced, Dear Daddy, Jonetta Rose Barras and authored Whatever Happened to Daddy’s Little Girl? and Jasmine Bowden–one of the young ladies who told her story in the film.

During their discussion they talked about the affects ofĀ absenteeĀ fathers on young black women and the importance of bringing to the light the hurt and the pain that a lot of these young women go through. It was truly a dynamic conversation and I think it is so important to talk about these issues that affect young black women especially today with 1.8 million young black girls without a father around.
The film came out last year and the book came out almost a decade ago, but I wanted to bring this issue back to the surface. It’s time that we see more black fathers stepping up and it’s time that we provide more support and guidance to make this happen!
