Oprah To Give 2012 Commencement Address at Spelman College
Oprah Winfrey will deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2012 at Spelman College. Lady O, who is well known for her support of Historically Black Colleges & Universities will receive the institution’s National Community Service award.
Winfrey received an honorary degree from the historically black women’s college in 1993. She will speak to Spelman’s 550 graduates on May 20.
Winfrey is being honored for her philanthropic efforts focused on education through her Angel Network as well as the establishment of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, where she has invested more than $40 million to educate students in grades seven through 12. Three students from that academy have been accepted as first-year students at Spelman as part of the Class of 2016.
Winfrey has also been a huge supporter of Spelman’s brother institution Morehouse College. As the school’s top donor, she has given a total of $12 million since 1989.
Michelle Obama was the Spelman College commencement speaker for the class of 2011.
