Son Of Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry Dead At 36
BREAKING: Son Of Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry Dead At 36
Marion “Christopher” Barry Jr., son of the late D.C. mayor with the same name, has died from a drug overdose, his stepmother Cora Masters Barry, confirmed to NBC 4 Washington News. Barry was only 36-years-old and the only son of Marion Barry Sr. and Effie Barry.
According to WUSA News, Barry was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Barry Jr. dabbled in politics, running for the Ward 8 Council seat in 2015 after his father, Marion Barry, died in 2014. But he lost that race coming in 6th.
As we know, Marion Barry Sr. served as the mayor of Washington, D.C. from 1979 to 1991 and 1995 to 1999 and a council member for three terms. Yet it was Barry Sr.’s struggles with drugs that made him a controversial figure when he was caught on tape and arrested by the FBI on crack cocaine charges in 1990, NBC noted.
Barry Jr. also had his share of problems with the law, starting in 2005 with a misdemeanor assault charge for resisting arrest, NBC noted. He also faced drug-related charges in 2011, 2013 and 2014. And in 2015, Barry made news again after having an outburst at a local bank, where he tried to withdraw $20,000, but his account was overdrawn. He was sentenced to 12 months probation.
We send the Barry family our deepest condolences.
