Oprah got a barbie.
Ava DuVernay got a barbie.
And now, so do we…at least one that could look like us.
Mattel announced that it was was finally hip to the physical diversity of American girls by creating a collection of barbies that are as colorful and differently shaped as we are.
The barbies’ body sizes range from curvy to tall to petite, and their skin is a colorful palette of cream, dark brown, caramel, and yellow.
The decision to switch up classic blonde hair, blue eyed, outrageously tall and unrealistically skinny  Barbs is major, considering the prototype has stayed the same for over 57 years.
One of our favorite things about the new American barbie is how Mattel took extra care to make sure the ethnic barbies didn’t conform to stereotypical racial body characteristics.
White barbie has the hips; Asian barbie is tall, and Black barbie is slim.
With 92% of all American girls aged 3 to 12 owning barbies, it is so important that our girls see more of themselves in the dolls they admire.
