Filmmakers Bob Hercules & Rita Corburn Whack are collaborating to create a documentary highlighting the mother of our soul, Maya Angelou.
The movie will include excerpts from four hours of interviews featuring Angelou, Bill Clinton, and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few.
The director describes the intimate process of combing through the poet’s experiences in an interview with Time, ‘She was going to have to go back over her life as she was approaching the end of her life,’ Coburn Whack says. ‘So she had to decide, ‘Do I want to do this?’”
The duo has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, which includes expensive archival footage and photography. They hope to have the project released by December 2016.
With an array of documentaries coming out, we are super sensitive when it comes to how Angelou is portrayed. We hope the film is infused with all the dignity and art that she brought to the world.
