Kalief Browder’s story rocked the nation when it was revealed that the teenage Black boy had been held at Rikers Island prison for three years without charges or a conviction after allegedly stealing a backpack. Browder suffered brutal beatings by prison guards and gang members at Rikers. He also was forced to serve a total of 800 days in solitary confinement after numerous suicide attempts while in custody. Browder finally killed himself in June 2015. Now Browder’s family is coming after the city by filing a wrongful death suit for $20,000,000 at the controller’s office, stating that Browder endured conditions comparable to torture and was irreversibly traumatized. All the usual suspects (Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Ben Carson) were present but it was the unlikely star, Donald Trump, that seemed to take over the evening with his bombastic (and at times blatantly offensive) responses. Trump is now breeding even more tension because he has stated that he may instead run as an independent at a later time. Read the breakdown at Politico.

The officer claimed that he shot Hammond because the teen was threatening to hit him with his car. However, an independent autopsy reveals that the cop’s testimony would have been impossible, as the gun shot wounds were found on Hammond’s side and the back of his shoulder. Twitter users that have been following the case have been criticizing supporters of the phrase “All Lives Matter” as being silent about the case.
