Loretta Lynch On Sandra Bland’s Death: People Of Color Are Right To Feel Frustrated

Attorney General Lynch spoke openly in a recent interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Sandra Bland’s death. The interview that airs today reveals Lynch’s comments saying that people of color are right to feel frustrated with the ongoing stories of failed and deadly policing tactics. Her goal is to reform policing strategies to calm people’s anxieties and tension in interacting with the authorities. The Justice Department launched a program earlier this year to better train police officers in their interactions with their local communities. Read more at the Huffington Post.

Conference Attendees Attacked With Pepper Spray By Cleveland PD

Conference attendees were pepper-sprayed Sunday at the National Convening of the Movement for Black Lives. The event was being held at the Cleveland State University and began peacefully until a teenage boy was found and accused of being intoxicated by the local police who went on to detain and medically evaluate him. He was returned to his mother hours after the incident. Onlookers are refuting the police’s story and are saying that the teen was roughly slammed to the ground. However, the police have not commented on how they handled the boy and insist that they used pepper spray to push back an uncooperative crowd. Read more at The Root.

New York Magazine Cover Features Bill Cosby’s 35 Rape Accusers

Today, dozens of women who have accused Cosby of rape are posing on the latest cover of New York Magazine. All of the women are wearing black and sitting on stools with somber expressions facing directly to the camera. There is an empty chair for the women who have yet to come forward. Spelman Halts Bill Cosby’s Endowed Professorship

Spelman has officially terminated the William and Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Endowed Professorship provided by Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille. The couple donated $20 million to the college back in 1988, the largest single contribution to a black college at the time. The funds in part created the school’s Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center. Both of the Cosby’s daughters attended the school; this news comes seven months after Spelman first suspended the professorship from its academic departments. Read more at the New York Times.

Mayor Ras Baraka Called Racial Epithet In Facebook Exchange Between Newark Cops

A onetime Newark police officer and a current police lieutenant referred to the current African American mayor, Ras Baraka, as a “gorilla” during a Facebook exchange. Baraka has responded saying: “It’s unfortunate that this happened, and we will not tolerate an atmosphere of bigotry and intolerance anywhere in this administration. I still believe we have the best police force in the state of New Jersey.” The active-duty police lieutenant will remain working in the force as officials investigate the matter. President Barack Obama is strategizing with National Security Adviser Susan Rice and Ethiopia’s leaders to bring peace to South Sudan during a visit to Addis Ababa today. Obama and his fellow world leaders are trying to reach an agreement to bring harmony to the region but if that fails, they will be looking at a back up plan that will included widened sanctions and an arms embargo.
