John Legend is using his popularity to change the world. The “All Of Me” singer announced his FREE AMERICA campaign today in hopes of ending mass incarceration, reports AP.
“We have a serious problem with incarceration in this country,” Legend said in an interview. “It’s destroying families, it’s destroying communities and we’re the most incarcerated country in the world, and when you look deeper and look at the reasons we got to this place, we as a society made some choices politically and legislatively, culturally to deal with poverty, deal with mental illness in a certain way and that way usually involves using incarceration.”
During his acceptance speech at this year’s Academy Awards, Legend mentioned, “We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more Black men under correctional control today then were under slavery in 1850.”
Legend is set to perform at a correctional facility in Austin, Texas on Thursday and chat with state legislators in a press conference. He will also visit a California state prison and co-host an event with Politico in D.C. later this month.
