Even homeless women read Vogue! That was the message behind Vogue Germany editor Elisabeth von Thurn ind Taxis’ tone-deaf Instagram post which went live over the weekend. The style editor and German princess snapped a picture of a homeless woman reading an old copy of Vogue on the street. She captioned the photo: “Paris is full of surprises … and @voguemagazine readers even in unexpected corners.”
Her followers immediately expressed distaste for the tasteless photo and caption, to which she initially replied “Why cruel? The person to me is as dignified as anyone else!” Elisabeth has since changed her tune. She deleted the disturbing post and shared a general image of Paris with the caption: “I wanted to extend my sincerest apologies for the offense my post has caused. Yours truly Elisabeth.” The story has been picked up by several major news outlets including The Daily Mail , who actually interviewed the woman pictured. She’s 65, her name is Maryse Dumas and she has yet to receive an apology: “It’s not nice taking pictures of people living on the street, that not polite [sic]. It’s no joke being destitute, living on the street.” We couldn’t agree more.
