Selma Oscar Nominations 2015
2015 Oscar Nominations: ‘Selma’ Snubbed By The Academy & We’re Not Surprised
The nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards are in and the Academy didn’t show much love the Ava DuVernay directed film, “Selma.” The civil right inspired film only received two nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Song for Common & John Legend’s “Glory.”
After receiving several Golden GLobe nominations, many thought the film was a shoo-in for the Oscar nominations, especially the lead actor David Oyelowo for his portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Ā

People will say “Well, the film was nominated for Best Picture.” But can anyone remember the last time a film has won Best Picture without any acting or directing nominations? Not in recent years.
DuVernay faced a unseen amount of criticism to make sure this film was brought to the big screen. We can only speculate if that criticism had any effect on the voting academy’s decision to nominate the film.
For some reason, when award nominations are announced, we always hold out hope that they will celebrate our films the way that we do. They won’t. That’s why it’s important to continue to support the NAACP ImageĀ Awards, the BET Awards and other awards ceremony that celebrate people of color.
