HER STORY
I met Jesus at work. I #worked at an after school program for an elementary school and we were doing the training before school started on how to run the program. I knew right away that I was not going to like him. He was the guy who always had the mean jokes; always trying to rank somebody. I thought it was interesting that he looked so white but was actually Cuban. Since moving to California from New York, it had been a while since I met a Latino who wasn’t Mexican. Anyway, his alpha-attention-seeking-self was something I wanted to stay clear of. One thing for sure, I noticed how people gravitated towards him. He was sort of the punchline guy. Something would happen and everyone would look forward to what witty, raunchy thing Jesus was going to say. I didn’t know he had any sexual interest in me until one day, he flat-out told me, “If I wasn’t your co-worker, I’d try to get with you.” Me being a hyphy-a** 18-year-old, those words excited me. We then proceeded in casual office flirtation. He eventually asked me out on a date. Looking back, I was totally uncomfortable. It had been a while since I went on a date and he didn’t even make one move on me. Not one move. I was confused because, hunty, let me tell you, I was NOT used to guys not making a move. It wasn’t until our second date that he reached for a kiss. It was blissful. I fell in love on that first kiss, for real.
Dating was crazy. Sometimes I feel like we are still dating or that we’ve always been married. Weird. One day, my mind just kept telling me I had to marry this man. I was getting self-conscious because I was, like, ‘if I’m feeling this way, he should too!’ But he wasn’t saying anything about marrying me, so I pulled his ass into a corner of the kitchen and made him look me in the face while I started asking all the questions men dread: “Where do you want to take this?”, “Do you see me in your future?”, “Are you going to propose to me?”, “I need you to propose to me if you want me to take you seriously.” Not going to lie. I think I scared him. He then looked at me and said “Alex, will you marry me?” I told him “yes.” but that he was going to have to ask me again with a ring and also bending down on one knee, which he did. I love him. Our wedding was beautiful. Everyday is beautiful because of him.
HIS STORY
When I first met Alex, I was at work and we were sitting in a circle and she said something that came off very awkward; I knew I liked her. I thought, at first, that Alex was a crazy, sexy Dominican girl from New York. She had really smart come backs and always had witty remarks. But she soon told me she wasn’t Dominican, but I was right about the New York part. Dating was very unpredictable. I didn’t know where things were going. We were really busy trying to find ourselves in the relationship. She was really quiet at first, and then got very loud. I started to see her colorful personality, which made me fall in love with her. To be honest, I didn’t think I’d fall in love with her, but I did. I really did.

THE BIG MOMENT
When I popped the question I was in the kitchen cooking black beans and Alex pinned me against the counter and asked “What are we waiting for?’ I saw how serious she was about marriage and I knew that if I didn’t, she’d take off eventually. I had been wanting to marry her for a while but I just didn’t know how and when. She told me I’d have to propose to her old school-style after our kitchen hostage proposal. She picked out her ring to have ordered and I surprised her one day in front of her dad’s house where there were white roses in bloom. I got down on one knee. She was happy and surprised. No regrets!
Alex and Jesus got married on June 8 in Oakland, CA! We wish them the best of luck in their union.
