Marvin Gaye’s Family Settles ‘Blurred Lines’ Lawsuit With Sony

Marvin Gaye’s family has reached a settlement with a music company owned by Sony over Robin Thicke’s Grammy-nominated song “Blurred Lines.”

As we reported earlier, children of the late R&B singer filed a lawsuit against EMI, claiming the company breached its obligations to protect the Gaye catalog. The suit accused EMI of not pursuing a copyright infringement case against Thicke for his alleged improper use of Gaye’s hit record “Got to Give It Up.”

Well, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the music publisher reached a settlement with the family. “The agreement means that Sony/ATV won’t have to defend its impartiality in administering copyrights to both Thicke’s work and Gaye’s. It will also release the company from having to address what was said to have been a conflict inherent in owning 30 percent of the music publishing market,” THR reported.

Since lawsuits between both parties still remain, the site added, “Thicke’s camp will likely want a jury to hear exactly why Sony concluded the songs were not substantially similar.”

Full terms of the settlement were not publicly released.
