Cory Booker Moves Forward With His Support Of Same-Sex Marriage Before Heading To Washington

Before Cory Booker heads to Washington, he plans to make history by presiding over New Jersey’s first same-sex wedding at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 21.

According to reports, the new Senator-elect will conduct at least 10 same-sex marriages as soon as the clock sticks midnight next Monday, the first day gay marriages will be legally allowed in the Garden State.

“The wedding planning is going into effect in Newark and other cities around New Jersey late this week as a result of Judge Mary Jacobson’s decision on Sept. 27 requiring that the state allow same-sex couples equal marriage rights,” Buzzfeed reports. “In her ruling, she stated that ‘same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.'”

“In order ‘to allow the State adequate time to prepare to effectuate this ruling or to pursue appellate remedies,’ she wrote, ‘the court directs that it take effect on October 21, 2013.'”

The ceremonies are scheduled to take place in the first floor rotunda of City Hall.

The Newark mayor, who won a U.S. Senate seat this week, is New Jersey’s first African-American senator and the only elected black Senator in the upper house.
