While you were busy eating, barbecuing, vacationing and sleeping your life away this 4th of July weekend, Jay-Z was putting in work and giving us the masterpiece that we now know as “Magna Carter Holy Grail.” The album was released after only one month of advertising and it was rumored that Hov spent only two weeks completing it! Whether the album is in heavy rotation on your iPod or is sitting in your recycle bin, one thing we can all agree on is that this album gave us a deeper look into the life and times of Shawn Carter, his marriage to Queen Bey, relationship with baby Blue and all that’s in between. While Shawn is no stranger to mentioning Beyonce and Blue in the majority of his lyrics, we’ve found about 10 references honoring hip-hop’s favorite mother and daughter duo in this album already, with 2 or 3 in one song alone!
Check out 10 of our favorite Beyonce & Blue inspired lyrics on Jay-Z’s new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail.”
1. Picasso Baby (Track 2.)
On this track, it seems as if Jay is basking in all of his wealth as he raps about Picasso, Da Vinci, Mona Lisa and more but it’s the reference to Beyonce that makes us smile.
“Sleeping every night next to Mona Lisa
The modern day version
With better features”
Who else could that be but Queen Bey!?
2. Picasso Baby (Track 2.)
On the same song, Jay Z also references his daughter, Blue, and how she must feel to own all of this too:
“Yellow Basquiat in my kitchen corner
Go ahead lean on that shit Blue
You own it”
You own it, Blue!
3. Part II (On The Run) — ft. Beyonce (Track 11)
A potential fave- Part 11 (“On The Run”) is a follow up to the 2003 Beyonce and Jay Z collaboration, Bonnie & Clyde. Of course, Bey accompanies her boo with a melodic verse while Jay raps over a slow beat. The couple’s super cute relationship is referenced in this song when Jay rapped,
“Matching tats, this Ink don’t come off
Even if the rings come off”
In reference to the couple’s matching tattoos and their wedding rings – even if the rings come off, they’ll be connected by the tattoos forever!

4. Part II (On The Run) — ft. Beyonce (Track 11)
Another Beyonce reference can be heard in the same song when Jay rapped,
“My past ain’t pretty, my lady is, my Mercedes is
My baby momma harder than a lot of you n****”
Baby momma as in Beyonce? We see what you did there, Jay!

5. Part II (On The Run) — ft. Beyonce (Track 11)
Yes, there is yet another Bey reference on that very same song (which I guess is appropriate).
“She fell in love with the bad guy, the bad guy
What you doing with them rap guys, them rap guys
They ain’t see potential in me girl, but you see it
If it’s me and you against the world, then so be it.”
So this interpretation is totally my opinion, but Jay is talking about Beyonce falling in love with him a.k.a the bad guy and how she saw potential in him early on, even though he’s considered a “rap guy”.
6. Beach Is Better (Track 12)
Even though this track is just an interlude; it easily has the best 56 seconds on the whole album and the catchiest phrases which of course reference Beyonce:
“Girl why you never ready, for as long as you took you better look like Halle Berry — or Beyonce”
I’d like to bet that this line will be Tweeted and Instagrammed quite often over the next few weeks.
7. Beach Is Better (Track 12)
In the same song, Jay raps about bringing his sand to the beach because his beach is better alluding to the saying “why bring sand to the beach?”.
“I brought sand to the beach
Cause my beach is better
You can keep ya beach
Cause that beach whatever”
You better tell ’em, Hov!
8. Jay Z Blue (Track 14)
We all know how much the Carters love the color blue, so much so that they named their daughter after it! While Jay has mentioned his love for the color blue in many of his raps before, on this song he’s dedicated each lyric to his daughter and his role as a husband and father.
“I wanna work and work till I’m half-dead, and I hear people saying, “She’s getting old’, wand what do I get? A daughter who cares as much about the beautiful dresses I give her as she cares about ME!”
9. Jay Z Blue (Track 14)
On that same song, Jay talks more about baby Blue:
“My baby getting chubby
Cue that Stevie Wonder music, aww isn’t she lovely”
And yes, Jay, she IS very lovely!
10. Jay Z Blue (Track 14)
And another one on the same track referencing Baby Blue:
“High on life
I could die from the fall
Imagine if I hit the floot
Apologies in Order
To Blue Ivy, my daughter
If it was up to me
You would be with me
Sort of like daddy dearest”
