This form of exercise does not discriminate therefore all bodies of all ages and sizes can experience the tremendous benefits of having a yoga practice. So whether you are looking to check in, chill out or shape up keep reading and find out what yoga practice is best for you.
Restorative
What to expect…
A large order of relaxation sans the work. Think super long holds coupled with the use of supportive blocks and bolsters.
What you’ll love…
The physical and mental timeout is both rejuvenating and refreshing for the overstressed and injured since this practice allows your mind and muscles to ease into a deep state of relaxation.
What you may not love…
Doing almost nothing may make you go crazy if your nickname is Miss Busy Bee.
Hatha
What to expect…
A physical yet gentle yoga practice that is basic and classical in it’s approach. Perfect for those looking to learn proper yogic breathing and postures.
What you’ll love…
This is the vanilla flavor of yoga. Simple, basic and delicious. Since the yogi herself is the pace setter, this practice is great for both the newbie and the expert.
What you may not love…
The slow pace may leave you just slightly damped in sweat. So if you are a “balls-to-the-wall” kind of FitGirll you may feel a bit under worked during this workout.
Iyengar or Anusara
What to expect…
This the perfectionist’s haven of yoga. A focus and precise practice that involves deliberate sequencing and significant attention to proper alignment.
What you’ll love…
Your form will be on point, your muscular imbalances will be both addressed and strengthened, and you will have the muscle definition to prove it.
What you may not love…
The decrease in pace while the instructor helps all the yogis present achieve proper alignment. Impatient FitGirls need not apply (unless you’re down for the mental challenge…which I P.S. highly recommend)!
Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Flow, Power Yoga
What to expect…
Bring on the lunges and pushups. These yoga practices are all about the “flow.” Vigorous, athletic and certifiably cardiovascular.
What you’ll love…
If athletic is your middle name you will feel right at home on your mat during this heart pumping practice. Oh and if you are trying to lose weight…roll your mat out too!
What you may not love…
The required familiarity of poses will make keeping up a challenge if you are a beginner yogi. Also since the emphasis is on continued movement weakness in the upper arms may leave your more frazzled than relaxed.
Bikram or Hot Yoga
What to expect…
Holding poses in a room that could double as a sauna.
What you’ll love…
How the heat helps remove toxins from your body and allows you to go much deeper in your stretches.
What you may not love…
The profuse sweating and the discomfort of spending up to 90 minutes in a stuffy (and often funky) space.
Now roll your mat out like a whip and get your YogaFlow on FitGirl!
