Later this year, Civil Rights activist, Rosa Parks will be the first African-American woman to be honored with a statue of her likeness on Capitol Hill at Statuary Hall. Parks is known as the “mother of the freedom movement” and the” first lady of Civil Rights movement” and gained these impressive titles from refusing to give up her seat in the Colored section on the bus when the White section was filled, to a White rider in 1955.

According to the NY Times, the statue will be revealed later this year. Even though we lost Parks in 2005, she continues to make history. Talk about impact! Each of the 50 states nominates two statues from their most impactful residents to rep the state. Parks will be representing Alabama–the place where she was born, raised and gained her infamy.

There’s a competition in place to decide who’s going to be the lucky designer to draft up the design. While we wait for the statue to be revealed, we can oooh and aaah at Rosa Parks’ commemorative stamp the post office will be offering after Feb. 4.
